Products list: Overview Sims Pacific Metals Limited is a 50/50 Joint Venture formed in 1992. It combines Simsmetal Industries, a subsidiary of Sims Group, one of the largest metal recyclers in the world with over 80 years of involvement in recycling and Fletcher Building, a major industrial company, active for over 35 years in New Zealand. Today, SPM has public recycling centres located throughout New Zealand providing a network of equipment, facilities, transport, and communications that turn unwanted consumer items and industrial scrap into raw materials for manufacturing operations here in New Zealand and around the world. Sims Pacific Metals is committed to the protection of the environment and the role the recycling industry plays in conserving natural resources. SPM operations save approximately 150,000 tonnes of waste metal from entering landfill every year. METAL RECYCLING SPM recycles a whole spectrum of non-precious, commodity metals. Non ferrous items (such as aluminium cans, copper wire/pipe, extrusion and casting offcuts) are compressed and "baled" or "bagged" and generally exported to Asia. Ferrous items (such as cars, roofing iron and steel appliances) are processed in Auckland or Christchurch by one of the company's shredders - otherwise known as "fragmentisers". The Auckland shredder can accommodate light gauge metal (up to 5mm thick) and its 3000 horsepower motor process around 60 tonnes of metal product per hour. Larger items are "sheared" with a giant mechanical pair of scissors or cut down with a gas torch. The final output is small knuckles of metal which are then exported or melted down by Pacific Steel to make new products such as concrete reinforcing bars.
